Clements is a name that will be familiar to many. Originally Clements Department store, it was a business that first opened in 1898 in Watford Town Centre and finally closed its doors in 2004.
In the summer of 2005 one of Clements’ long standing former employees, Simon Shoebottom, who had been the buyer of Furniture, Beds and Carpets was then given the opportunity to use the Clements name to set up his own business. He opened his first shop at The Galleria in Hatfield selling lounge and dining room furniture.
On a visit to Watford in late 2006 he ventured into the now TJ Hughes Department store which had opened on the original Clements site and promptly bumped into one of his old colleagues who was working as an assistant to the store manager. To cut a long story short, TJ Hughes were looking for a furniture concession for their lower ground floor and Simon jumped at this opportunity to get back into Watford where the Clements name was so well known and he had spent many years working!
He opened Clements Furniture in March 2007 and since then the business has continued to expand with the introduction of Clements Carpets in the Spring of 2008 and the addition of a Beds and Bedroom furniture department in November 2008.
Sadly, the Hatfield Galleria shop closed in February 2009 but it has enabled Simon and his team to concentrate their energies on the Watford shop, which is doing well despite the current difficult economic situation.
Simon has almost 25 years of experience in Furniture having previously been Furniture Manager in John Lewis before joining Clements in 1990. His hair may definitely have gone and his waistline thicker than those who remember him from the early days but his extensive knowledge of the furniture market will invariably mean you will find what you are looking for – and if Clements cannot get it, he can usually suggest who can.
